The Thermogenic Potential of Citral

Earlier today I was thinking about essential oils that support weight reduction.  In the process of contemplation, my mind went back to last fall when Marc Schreuder, Young Living’s Director of Product Formulation, presented data he had compiled on weight reduction at a seminar in Michigan.
He talked about the thermogenic properties of the molecule citral and revealed that Lemon Myrtle is 90% citral!!
According to Marc’s research, here are the levels of citral found in certain essential oils:
•ORANGE OIL  1%
•LEMON OIL  3%
•LIME OIL  7%
•MELISSA  12%
•PETITGRAIN  36%
•LEMON MYRTLE  90%
One of the studies he cited expounds on the potential this molecule holds for weight management.  The study used lemongrass essential oil, which is an impressive 80% citral.
In the study, the researchers induced diet related obesity in 50 rats.  Later, they divided the rats into groups: a control group and groups that received varied dosages of a lemongrass oil/ethanol solution.   The three groups of rats that were fed the lemongrass oil all reduced their body mass as well as improved their insulin sensitivity.
I have excerpted some of the key points of the study.  You can read the study in full HERE
Effects of citral, a naturally occurring antiadipogenic molecule, on an energy-intense diet model of obesity
Department of Physiology, Medical College, Kolkata, West Bengal, India

Citral-treated groups showed a dose-dependent reduction in body weight gain. They significantly had lower fasting glucose levels, improved glucose tolerance, lower fasting plasma glucose, higher metabolic rate, and smaller adipocytes after drug administration.
Conclusion:
The findings suggest that citral increased energy dissipation (and also reduced lipid accumulation) consequently preventing and ameliorating diet-induced obesity. In addition it improved insulin sensitivity and glucose tolerance. In the current scenario of increasing prevalence of obesity and diabetes, citral may prove as novel agent in its management.
From this data, I have decided to conduct an experiment of my own.  I am going to ingest a two capsules each filled with 10 drops lemongrass and 5 drops lemon myrtle every morning for the next 30 days and see what happens. :)

The study did mention that the antimicrobial effects of citral could lead to diminished gut flora, so I’ll take my capsules in the same was Gary Young instructed us to take Inner Defense.  Take the oils in the morning and probiotics before going to bed.  (“Weed in the morning; Feed at night.”)  Young Living has a great probiotic called Life 5.
If you would like to experiment with Lemon Myrtle and Lemongrass essential oils, please remember that I only recommend Young Living Essential Oils for internal use.  Otherwise, you may not be getting true, therapeutic-grade essential oils that are safe to ingest.

Make this the Year of Transformation

Just as this baby girl has most of her life ahead of her, you have more than eight months ahead of you to make 2012 your year of Transformation!
We have been going through more than three years of a real economic crisis in the world, and some forecasters are telling us that 2012 is going to be worse. They’re saying that more people will be out of work, more homes will be lost, and more businesses will collapse. These forecasters are preaching a lot of doom and gloom.
However, I look around me and I don’t see the doom and gloom. We do have a tendency to see what we look for, so I look for excitement; I look for growth; I look for success; and I look for discovery, research, and accomplishments. If you’re busy looking at these things, it’s pretty hard to see the doom and gloom and the economic crisis. They will still affect us, but if we want to transform our lives, then we have to focus on transforming our attitudes–and that’s why I’ve chosen Transformation for the theme for 2012.
Part of that is transforming from the negative aspects of our attitudes and thinking to the positive ones. Now does that mean that the negative thoughts will go away? Not all of them. But they will certainly diminish and the positive thoughts will become your primary focus, so what you’re focused on will become your reality.
We have a wonderful oil blend called Transformation. Use this oil blend in a diffuser in your home to set up the frequency for transformation while you write down your goals for 2012—what you want to accomplish, where you want to be with your health, with your belief system, your attitude, or your financial condition. Maybe it’s even your marital status or your personal feelings. Just write down where you are now, where you want to be, and what you would like to become through this transformational year. You still have most of the year ahead of you, so start now!

10 Ways to Detoxify Your Body

10 Ways to Detoxify Your Body

Body cleanse and detox diet tips for beginners
Three naturopathic physicians share insight on why and when to detox, what type of detox program is right for you, and 10 ways to start.
Feeling sluggish or out of sync? Having skin problems, aches and pains, or digestive problems? Straying from your healthier habits lately? Having trouble kicking off your weight loss? It might be time for a body detox.
Practiced for centuries by many cultures around the world — including ayurvedic and Chinese medicine systems — detoxification is about resting, cleaning and nourishing the body from the inside out. By removing and eliminating toxins, then feeding your body with healthy nutrients, detoxifying can help protect you from disease and renew your ability to maintain optimum health.

"The body has its own natural healing system," says Peter Bennett, N.D., medical director of Helios Clinic in Victoria, B.C., and co-author with Stephen Barrie, N.D. and Sara Faye, of 7-Day Detox Miracle (Prima Health). "Detoxification enhances this system," he explains.

How does detoxification work?
Basically, detoxification means cleaning the blood. It does this mainly by removing impurities from the blood in the liver, where toxins are processed for elimination. The body also eliminates toxins through the kidneys, intestines, lungs, lymph and skin. However, when this system is compromised, impurities aren't properly filtered and every cell in the body is adversely affected.

A detox program can help the body's natural cleaning process by:
¨      Resting the organs through fasting;
¨      Stimulating the liver to drive toxins from the body;
¨      Promoting elimination through the intestines, kidneys and skin;
¨      Refueling the body with healthy nutrients.

"Detoxification works because it addresses the needs of individual cells, the smallest units of human life," says Bennett.

How do you know if you need to detoxify?

Bennett suggests that everyone should detox at least once a year. A short detoxifying program or whole body cleanse is generally safe; in fact, scientific studies show that a detox is beneficial for health. However, Bennett cautions against detoxifying for nursing mothers, children, and patients with chronic degenerative diseases, cancer or tuberculosis. Consult your health care practitioner if you have questions about whether detoxing is right for you.

Today, with more toxins in the environment than ever, "it's critical to detox," says Linda Page, N.D., Ph.D., the author of Detoxification (Healthy Healing Publications). Page recommends detoxing for symptoms such as unexplained fatigue, sluggish elimination, irritated skin, allergies or low-grade infections; bags under the eyes; a distended stomach even if the rest of your body is thin; menstrual difficulties; or mental confusion.

Where do you begin?

First, lighten up your toxin load. Eliminate alcohol, coffee, cigarettes, refined sugars and saturated fats, all of which act as toxins in the body and are obstacles to your healing process. Also, minimize use of chemical-based household cleaners and personal health care products (cleansers, shampoos, deodorants and toothpastes), and substitute natural alternatives.

Another deterrent to good health is stress, which triggers your body to release stress hormones into your system. While these hormones can provide the "adrenaline rush" to win a race or meet a deadline, in large amounts they create toxins and slow down detoxification enzymes in the liver. So it's a good idea to detox stressful life situations along with detoxifying your body. Yoga, Qigong and meditation are simple and effective ways to relieve stress by resetting your physical and mental reactions to the inevitable stress life will bring.

Which detox program is best for you?

There are many detoxification programs and detox recipes, depending on your individual needs. Many programs follow a 7-day schedule because, as Bennett explains, "it takes the body some time to clean the blood." His program involves fasting on liquids for two days, followed by a carefully-planned five-day detox diet to allow the digestive system to rest. He also advises supplements, herbs, exercise, and practices such as dry-skin brushing and hydrotherapy to enhance circulation.

Page recommends a 3-7 day juice fast (drinking only fresh fruit and vegetable juices and water) as an effective way to release toxins.

Other popular detoxing programs and natural body cleanses include:
·                                 Cleansing supplement packages, which generally contain fiber, vitamins, herbs and minerals. There are several safe products on the market, with easy-to-follow instructions.
·                                 A routine of drinking only water one day each week — an ancient practice of many cultures.
10 ways to help your body detoxify
After a detoxification program, you can cleanse your body daily through diet, supplements and lifestyle practices.

1. Eat plenty of fiber, including brown rice and organically-grown fresh fruits and vegetables. Beets, radishes, artichokes, cabbage, broccoli, spirulina, chlorella, and seaweed are excellent detoxifying foods.  And drink at least two quarts of water daily.

2. Cleanse and protect the liver by taking herbs such as dandelion root, burdock and milk thistle, and drinking green tea.

3. Take vitamin C, which helps the body produce glutathione, a liver compound that drives away toxins.

4. Breathe deeply to allow oxygen to circulate more completely through your system.

5. Transform stress by emphasizing positive emotions.

6. Practice hydrotherapy by taking a very hot shower for five minutes, allowing the water to run on your back. Follow with cold water for 30 seconds. Do this three times, and then get into bed for 30 minutes.

7. Sweat in a sauna so your body can eliminate wastes through perspiration.

8. Dry-brush your skin or try detox foot spas/foot baths to remove toxins through your pores. Special brushes are available at natural products stores.

9. What is the most important way to detoxify? "Exercise," says Bennett. "Yogaor jump-roping are good. One hour every day." Also try Qigong, a martial-arts based exercise system that includes exercises specifically for detoxifying or cleansing, as well as many other exercises with specific health benefits.

10.  Drink 2-6 drops of Young Living’s Lemon Essential Oil in water daily (it is also an excellent antidote for heartburn, and is a great antiseptic).

The Importance of Quality

Many oils, touted as essential oils, are derived with harsh chemicals, diluted, or copied and produced in a lab. Cheap copies bring cheap results and have the potential to be toxic. Therefore, it’s important to choose high-quality essential oils.
Young Living offers the highest possible therapeutic-grade essential oils, essential oil blends, and oil-enhanced products. At Young Living, in-house and independent laboratory testing shows that Young Living essential oils meet high industry standards that qualify them as “therapeutic grade.” This means that health professionals choose them for promoting health and wellness.
Young Living is dedicated to producing essential oils from the highest-quality plants. Healthy plants and proper distillation produce superior essential oils with powerful benefits. Every oil is put through a series of rigorous tests before it is deemed qualified to bear the Young Living label. Our essential oils are then bottled in dark, thick, glass containers to protect the integrity of the oils. Under the lid is a fixed orifice that helps to measure dosages and to ensure safety, particularly for young children.
Leading the Way in Essential Oils
After personally witnessing the amazing difference between common aromatic oils and therapeutic-grade essential oils, D. Gary Young, Founder and President of Young Living Essential Oils, began a personal campaign to protect the legitimacy of the ancient healing art of essential oil therapy.
Gary’s vast experience, years of study, and guidance from world experts became a driving force to restore the proper use of essential oils. The results? Three herb farms, a unique distillation process in the nation’s largest therapeutic-grade essential oil distilleries, and a booming, worldwide company-Young Living Essential Oils.

Going live with Get Oiled!

Good morning fellow cyber-spacers!  And Happy Leap Year Day to you!

I have decided that Leap Year Day is the day I am launching out into a new adventure!  You see, I have been flirting with the idea of starting my own business (es) for many years now.

It all started back in 2007 when I was in college at Upper Iowa University taking business courses.  I majored in Marketing and minored in Psychology, thinking that this would really help me with my business skills.  Unfortunately it just bored me to tears!

So, I put my plans of finishing my 4 year degree on hold, fell in love and married my wonderful husband.  lol.  Funny how life takes it's turns!

Anyway, about a year ago, my husband and I partnered with a company, "Young Living" the industry leader in Therapeutic Grade Essential Oils.

What are Therapeutic Grade Essential Oils?

An essential oil is a liquid that is generally distilled (most frequently by steam or water)             from the leaves, stems, flowers, bark, roots, or other elements of a plant. Essential oils, contrary to the use of the word "oil" are not really oily-feeling at all. Most essential oils are clear, but some oils such as patchouli, orange and lemongrass are amber or yellow in color.
Essential oils contain the true essence of the plant it was derived from. Essential oils are highly concentrated and a little goes a long way.
Essential oils are not the same as perfume or fragrance oils. Where essential oils are derived from the true plants, perfume oils are artificially created fragrances or contain artificial substances and do not offer the therapeutic benefits that essential oils offer.

So, back to Leap Year Day....I have been talking and talking about so many goals.  Too much talk and not enough action.  And I have been boring myself with my plans of how I am going to be successful (I mean I have really talked them to death).  I was reading yesterday that sometimes in life you need to commit to your goals the way a parachuting soldier commits to his jump.  So, today I am leaping out of the plan of indecision, and into my new career as an Independent Consultant for Young Living.  I trust that YHWH, who packed my parachute, has prepared me for this day.

Please follow my blog and watch as my adventure unfolds, with mystery, and intrigue, and a few good laughs along the way!

Happy Leap Year Day and don't forget to pull the rip-cord!
